Royal Pamporovo
Pamporovo is the most popular and the largest ski
resort in Bulgaria. It is situated 250 km southeast of the capital of Bulgaria Sofia, 80 km. south of Plovdiv and 11 km.
north of Smolian. The resort is situated at altitude of 1650 metres at the foot of the Snejanka Peak /1926м./. Numerous
ski tracks descend from the summit, where a 156 metre high Television Tower rises. The mountain resort and the ski tracks
are surrounded by century-old fir trees, a fact that contributes to the beauty and attraction of the place. The total length
of the ski tracks is 28 km. The winter here offers a true paradise for skiers and snowboarders. Skiing and snowboarding is
available from the end of November till the end of April. The total number of snowy days exceeds 150 and the snow cover often
reaches two meters height. The ski slopes are of various length and difficulty. There are several green tracks and platforms,
equipped with mini ski lifts for the beginners. Some extremely steep /black/ tracks are available for the advanced. Around
Snejanka peak there are several tracks, with total length of approximately 50 km, constructed especially for the ski-running
and biathlon fans. There is also a shooting-ground in the Yazovira area. Several ski-schools with highly qualified staff
operate in Pamporovo. Around the ski runs and hotels there are about 15 ski-wardrobes, which offer modern ski and snowboard
equipment. International and national ski competitions such as ski running, ski-orientation and biathlon for women and
children take place in Pamporovo. The winter mountain bike on the ski runs of Pamporovo gains more and more popularity
lately. Offers excellent conditions, the resort is one of the top places for snow-boarders and in particular for free-style
fans. The Local snowboard club called `Snowboard Society` has built a 150 metre-long half-pipe over the Snejanka track
/Malkata Stena/, with 3 metre high walls. Here, the most prestigious Bulgarian free style competitions are held yearly.
Should you need some professional training, you can chose among the several snowboard schools at you disposal at the Studenec
hotel. In the summer Pamporovo attracts tourists with its lovely nature, fresh air, sunny and at the same time cool days.
SPA and medical centers at some of the hotels offer excellent recreation and health promoting programs. Swimming, bowling,
tennis, archery, and high mountain biking are among the sports, which you can practise in the resort.
A grand project,
called `Perelik`, aims at linking the Perelik peak in Pamporovo with the Mechi Chal peak near Chepelare. According to the
mayor of Smolyan, the completion of the project will establish Rodopi Mountain as a tourist centre with three main bodies -
Mechi Chal, Pamporovo and Perelik. The environmental impact assessment has already received the approval of the Ministry of
Ecology. Dora Yankova, the mayor of Smolyan announced that the execution of the project is to start this summer and next year
the tourists will see the results.
The Perelik project is emphasizing on ski runs and equipment building worth 55 million
Euros and on hotels construction in Smolyanski ezera area and Raikovski livadi area. At the moment Pamporovo resort offers
almost 18 kilometres of ski runs and 4,920 beds. According to the project additional 29.8 kilometres of ski runs and
facilities are to be constructed and the number of beds is to increase by 8000. Main goals of the project are to create
